For those trying to locate loved ones or make sure they are safe, the American Red Cross operates a Safe and Well Registry that allows residents in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to register their information to let family members here know they are safe, and to allow residents in Northwest Indiana to search for family members if they are enrolled. This registry is available online at https://safeandwell.communityos.org/cms/.
Safe and Well registrations also can be completed by texting SAFE to 78876, with messages available in both English and Spanish, or by contacting the American Red Cross, Greater Chicago Area, by phone at (312) 729-6100.
Further, the American Red Cross Emergency App features an “I’m Safe” button that allows users to post a message to their social media accounts, letting friends and family know they are out of harm’s way. The app can be downloaded for free in app stores by searching for the “American Red Cross” or by texting “GETEMERGENCY” to 90999.
