Putting American Jobs First
We continue to face difficult economic times in Northwest Indiana, and much work remains to be done to rebuild our economy. That is why Pete recently introduced legislation to help our region keep the jobs we have and lay the foundation for job growth and economic recovery:
• Fighting for American Jobs Act
• American Steel First Act
Fighting for American Jobs Act
During these difficult economic times, we must fight for every American job. Pete believes that companies that lay off American workers and choose to outsource jobs should not be eligible to receive resources from the federal government. This measure would put American workers at the forefront of the agenda of any company that receives federal assistance.
The Fighting for American Jobs Act would:
• Ban companies that lay off American workers while hiring workers in foreign countries from receiving federal assistance.
• Require the federal government to track federal subsidies that go to companies outsourcing American jobs.
• Compel businesses that receive federal assistance to report their employee numbers and annual layoffs in the U.S. and abroad.
American Steel First Act
Steel is the heart of the economy in Northwest Indiana and a critical component of American industry. Pete is working to make certain that iron and steel produced in the United States can help make our nation strong again — that we “Buy America.” This measure can help make certain that American-made materials are used to put Americans to work and power our economic recovery.
The American Steel First Act would:
• Require the Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security to use American-made steel in their construction, alteration, or repair of roads, airports, harbors, tanks, ships, and other projects related to our nation’s defense and infrastructure.
• Create jobs and help lay the foundation for a vibrant new economy.
